Surviving Hairy Bikers member Si King has responded to those participating in a memorial bike ride for the late Dave Myers. Up to 3,000 motorcyclists are expected to take part in the event, which Biker Escorts East Yorkshire has organised for Sunday (April 7).
Less than two years after revealing his cancer diagnosis, Dave died surrounded by his family on February 28, at the age of 66. Si, 57, broke the news to fans at the time and said he would “miss” his friend “every day”.
Following the star’s death, bike riders have been working tirelessly to organise a tribute event which would raise crucial funds for cancer research. On Sunday morning, a myriad of motorcycle enthusiasts began lining up in Beverly to start the ride.
An itinerary, posted to the Biker Escorts East Yorkshire Facebook page, said that those partaking in the marshalled event would be heading through Scagglethorpe, Pickering and Whitby before closing their commute at Oasis Cafe in Scarborough. Ahead of the ride, Si took to social media and wished all participants good luck.
Posting on both X, formerly known as Twitter, and Instagram, Si wrote: “A message from Si King to all the riders taking part in today’s Memorial Ride Out for Dave Myers. I hope the ride out goes well for you all. Many many thanks for remembering Dave in this way.
“He would have loved it. Dave’s family, friends and I are really touched. Love to you all, be safe. Si King x”
Fans of The Hairy Bikers have since come out in their droves to pledge their support during this difficult time.
One X user wrote: “Sending love and thinking of you, Lily and the family today. Such a lovely man as I met both of you at the NEC Good Food on quite a few occasions. Dave will be riding with you all in spirit. Bless you all and stay safe.”
A second said: “I am still watching the current repeats on BBC2 it still seems surreal the Dave is no longer with us riding around the countryside with his best mate. Hope Dave’s family and you are hearing up Si. Take care mate.” (sic)
“That’s fabulous Si , so many sending love to you and all those close to Dave,” replied another. “Here’s a hug and love from a long time fan off the shows and have enjoyed cooking your recipes over the years.” (sic)
A fourth said: “A beautiful day that Dave would be proud to be thought of in such high regard, God bless.”
“What a lovely day for it too, I’m sure Dave will be looking down with a smile,” commented another fan.
Si’s latest update comes just days after the father-of-three reflected on a project he was extremely “proud” of.
On Friday (5 April), the County Durham native revealed that his and Dave’s new cookbook, The Hairy Dieters’ Fast & Fresh**,** was set to hit shelves later this month.
Posting to The Hairy Bikers’ 370,000 Instagram followers, he wrote: “Fast and Fresh is coming out on Thursday 25 April!”
“Dave and I loved working on this book last year, we are incredibly proud of it and we hope you enjoy it. Pre-order your copy from the link in our bio so you don’t miss out.”
During Si and Dave’s partnership, they have published several Hairy Dieters cookbooks including 2022’s Simple Healthy Food, Brilliant Bakes and Ultimate Comfort Food.
