Volkswagen Group's Cupra has used the backdrop of the 2024 America's Cup in Barcelona to unveil its Terramar compact crossover.
Cupra doesn't operate in the US, but the brand announced it would in March. will be launched here later this decade, initially with two vehicles. One of them will be an electric version of the Formentor compact crossover whose current generation based on the outgoing global Volkswagen Tiguan. The second will be a larger SUV that will be built in North America.
Terramar is unlikely to make the trip, but it gives an idea of what Kupras heading to the USA could be as. The car represents the latest evolution of the brand's design language, as well as technologies usually reserved for premium cars, such as high-definition matrix LED headlights, a head-up display, and Sennheiser audio.
Terramar is closely related to the latest version global Volkswagen Tiguan which debuted late last year. The US will receive your own Tiguan using the same platform as the vehicles coming later this year. The platform is the latest evolution MQB architecture VW Group developed for high-volume vehicles with gas and hybrid power units.
2025 Cupra Terramar
Details of the Terramar are still under wraps, but Cupra has confirmed a range of petrol powertrains, as well as a 268bhp plug-in hybrid variant that will likely share the same 19.7kWh battery as the plug-in hybrid version of the global Tiguan.
Terramar will be produced at a plant of another VW Group brand. Audi plant in Gyor, Hungary.Deliveries to markets where Cupra operates will begin later this year.
Cupra began life as a performance sub-brand of the VW Group's Seat brand, but was repositioned as a standalone brand in 2018, offering a range of sporty, emotive cars with striking designs. It still offers tuned versions of Seat cars, but has gradually introduced more standalone products, such as the Terramar.
