Salamanca's PSOE proposes 'climate shelters' 15 minutes from home to combat heat waves

He Socialist Municipal Group in the Salamanca City Council proposed this Tuesday the creation of a “climate refuge network” face it heat wavesThe PSOE will raise the proposal at the next municipal plenary session, scheduled for next Friday, with the aim of offering comfortable spaces before periods of high temperatures “more and more frequent and extreme.”

Libraries, schools and sports centres are some examples of buildings that socialists propose to use to provide “relief” from the heat and make it available to citizens air-conditioned rooms.

“Heat waves are becoming more intense and are increasingly affecting the health of citizens, many of whom They don't have air conditioning systems in their houses. or they live in poorly adapted buildings, so they have to move to refrigerated spaces,” explains socialist councillor María Jesús Santa María.

The councillors propose to conduct a city-wide study to locate spaces that can serve as 'sanctuaries' and to create a network that gives all citizens access to one within a 15 minute walk from your home. These spaces would be put into use when the State Meteorological Agency issues this an orange or red level warning at high temperatures and will remain open as long as it lasts.

“With this initiative we are following the example of cities like Barcelona and Seville, leading the adaptation to extreme heat and guaranteeing safe spaces for our neighbors. Salamanca must be a city adapted to climate change and protecting citizens from its effects,” defended María Jesús Santa María.

The climate shelters proposed by the socialists They would complement the city's green spaces, which also provide shelter from the heat, but are “inadequate in the most extreme episodes.” In the activated spaces, citizens would find a “controlled and safe” environmentaccess to drinking water and rest areas.

People with fewer resources they would be 'the biggest beneficiaries''The socialists have assured of this proposal, as they have greater difficulties in keeping their homes at a comfortable temperature. In addition, a solution would be offered to those who suffer more from the heat, such as the elderly and children, reports Ical.
