US House Speaker Mike Johnson won the Republican nomination to remain in office last night and is on track to retain it after President-elect Donald Trump also endorsed it, the Associated Press reports.
While Johnson has yet to face a serious challenger, he faces dissent within his party, particularly from the right and conservatives, who have refused to vote with their colleagues to accept promises of future cooperation, the body said.
During his first visit to Washington since his party won the election earlier this month, Trump told House Republicans that he fully supports Trump.
Johnson, in turn, praised Trump, calling him the “comeback king.”
Johnson's path to this point has been extraordinary, according to the AP. More than a year ago, his candidacy was initially pitched as a last chance to replace ousted former chairman Kevin McCarthy, and Johnson quickly positioned himself to support Trump and lead the Republican Party in this year's elections.
