The President spoke in these terms at the closing event of the PSC campaign, together with the Socialist candidate: Salvador Illa; the mayor of Barcelona, Jaume Collboni; and number 2 for Barcelona, Alicia Romero. In this way he has appealed to the 'political right', whom he has reminded that Spain has voted the United Nations General Assembly, along with more than 140 other countriesthe full recognition of Palestine as a state.
He has complained that right-wing parties “insult everyone, even young people, those demonstrating at universities', not only from Spain, but from Europe and the whole world, in solidarity with the Palestinian people, he noted.
Sánchez has referred in this way to the camping trips taking place this week at universities with the aim of showing his support for the Palestinian people and demanding an end to the conflict in the Gaza Strip, where more than 35,000 Palestinians have died by the Israeli offensive.
Full integration of Palestine into the UN
In the international context, in relation to what the Spanish President has stated, a historic step has been taken within the United Nations: a resolution calling for full integration of Palestine as a member state of the organization and that, in anticipation of this possible step, gives more voice to Palestinians worldwide.
This resolution, co-sponsored by dozens of countries, including Spain, passed with 143 votes in favornine against – including Israel, USAHungary, Argentina and the Czech Republic – and 25 abstentions.
This text, promoted after the US veto in the Security Council on the full integration of Palestine, proposes “additional rights and privileges”. It is necessary at this point to remember that Palestine is part of the UN as an observer state that is not a member, at the same level as Vatican City, although with this move it will have greater representation and voice – not voting rights – within the United Nations Assembly. Likewise, the resolution states that “the State of Palestine is eligible for membership” and “recommends that the Security Council reconsider the matter,” although it cannot compel the said body to do so. Likewise, it affirms “the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination,” including their “right to an independent State of Palestine” and “the end of the Israeli occupation.”
However, there was another moment in which Israel took center stage during this plenary session: its ambassador, Gilar Erdan, shredded the UN letter moments before the vote. According to the diplomat from Benjamin Netanyahu's government, the United Nations gesture would benefit Hamas, as “a gift”, which he has compared to Adolf Hitler. In this way, the Israeli ambassador has gone back to the time of Nazi Germany to commemorate the birth of the UN and in turn to lament that if “the forces of good” united then, they must do the same now to “promoting the creation of a Palestinian terrorist state led by the Hitler of the 21st century”.
