Denise Welch has revealed that she once had an accident whilst walking around New York City. In a new questions and answers session with The Guardian, Denise was asked to reveal her “most embarrassing” moment.
In reply, the 65-year-old said: “Sh***ing myself in New York last November. I was wearing cream trousers,” she explained.
“We were going to see my son Matty [Healy] and his band, The 1975, at Madison Square Garden, and I was walking through the streets, enjoying the sunshine.” Denise continued to say that during the walk, she was “pretending” to be in a music video, and was “throwing” her hat into the sky.
“Like Mary Tyler Moore,” she added. “I saw a couple of people turn and look at me.”
The Waterloo Road actor explained that while she isn’t too famous in New York, she sometimes gets recognised as the 34-year-old’s mother. “So I’m smiling and waving at them,” she continued.
However, it appeared that the onlookers weren’t looking at the Loose Woman because of her famous son. But it turns out Denise didn’t realise the full extent of their interest until she returned to her hotel.
Concluding her mortifying story, she said: “I went back to the hotel room and bent over to get something out of the suitcase. And my husband said: ‘Do you realise you’ve sh** yourself?”
On Saturday, Denise posted a photograph of the interview to her 410,000 Instagram followers and wrote: “Felt really grown up seeing my interview in @guardian. Then remember what I said!!!”
Many famous faces and followers of the star have flocked to the comments section to give their take on the revelation. Dame Kelly Holmes wrote: “You are fab.”
Interior designer Nikki Shore said: “Omg you sh** yourself. Love your answers and the joke.”
Elsewhere, another fan said: “’Sh***ing myself in New York’… Well, it could have been worse, ‘Sh***ing myself on Dancing On Ice. Another wrote: “Honest and bloody fun”.
Earlier this week, Denise and her ITV co-star Sue Cleaver made headlines after they butted heads over Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. On Wednesday, (29 November) the pair were discussing Omid Scobie’s new book on Loose Women.
When asked if she would be reading the new offering – which centres on the Duke and Duchess of Sussex – Denise nodded and said: “It’s on my Christmas list and I will read it. You know, listen, I think that we know enough about this guy and how much or how little he actually knows Meghan and Harry, but we certainly know which camp he falls in.”
She added that she has always been a “very outspoken supporter of Harry and Meghan” and is generally “outnumbered” on the show. “So I think that I will be reading it, I will be aware that some of it is his take only, but I think I will be more likely to believe more about what he says in this book than maybe some people would.”
Following the proclamation, Sue, 60, said: “I don’t think we need to be in a camp. Because the trouble is with humans we all have our own reality and whatever we believe, we seem to think is the truth and let’s be honest, none of us know what’s going on in there.”
Denise added that she “liked” being in a camp, before Sue quipped: “Sometimes there is just no hope for people, is there?”
