Lord Sugar urged Meghan Markle seek help after bid to trademark 500-year-old word

Lord Alan Sugar urged Meghan Markle to use his services after she named her now-defunct podcast on Spotify, “Archetypes”.

The Duchess of Sussex put in an application at the United States Patent and Trademark Office by Archewell Audio after she had signed a lucrative £18million deal with Spotify in 2022.

The word “archetypes” derives from the ancient Greeks and first entered the English language in the 1540s.

Meghan fronted the podcast that year where she spoke to historians, experts and women who had experienced being typecast. But the Duchess was thought to be too late to use the term and reportedly faced challenges from other companies using the word, such as the skincare and cleaning products business, who were also called Archetypes and had already established a trademark.

The Apprentice host reacted to the news as he took to X, formerly Twitter, and addressed the debacle two years ago.

The 77-year-old took to the micro-blogging site and suggested Meghan should have contacted him before she applied to trademark the name “archetypes”.

In view of his 5.2 million followers, Lord Sugar tweeted: “Should have gone to @TM_Wizards,” followed by a laughing face emoji.

The Apprentice star announced his investment in Charting Trade Mark Attorneys, TM Wizards, in December 2021.

Speaking in a promotional video at the time, the entrepreneur said: “Apart from yourself and the people that work for your business, your intellectual property rights are likely to be your most valuable commercial assets.

“One type of intellectual right is your trademark which includes your business name, logos, slogans, sub-brands, and in some cases your personal name and nicknames.”

He went on: “When it comes to my businesses, I don’t mess around or take any risk when it comes to protecting my trademarks and intellectual property. I make sure it gets done.”

Archewell’s application said the word would cover a long list of entertainment services “in the fields of cultural treatment of women and stereotypes facing women” and would be used for podcasts, TV shows, DVDs, CDs and streaming services.

However, Archetypes podcast did not get renewed for a second season, and the Sussexes’ contract with Spotify ended back in June last year. The reasons behind this decision were not clear until recently, when Spotify CEO Daniel Ek shed some light on the situation in an interview with the BBC.

“We thought new innovation was needed to happen here. We thought, ‘We can come in and offer a great experience that both makes consumers very happy and allows new creators new avenues,'” Ek told the BBC, explaining why Archetypes was axed from the streaming platform’s programming.

He also talked about how Spotify tried to compete with similar platforms, saying, “And the truth of the matter is, some of it has worked, some of it hasn’t. We’re learning from those and we are moving on and we wish all of the ones we didn’t renew with the best of success they can have going forward.”

Although Archetypes was a successful show that won Pop Podcast of 2022 at the People’s Choice Awards and reportedly brought in an estimated 10 million listeners, it did not bring in as much money for Spotify as they had hoped.

Elsewhere, Meghan will officially launch her new lifestyle brand later this spring, PEOPLE understands. She unveiled American Riviera Orchard’s website and Instagram account on March 14.
