Meghan Markle has opened up about the inspiration she took from her time as a working member of the Royal Family in a new Archewell report.
Discussing some of the inspiration behind her chosen charities, the report spoke about Meghan’s first solo royal project that supported women impacted impacted by the Grenfell Tower fire in 2017.
The Hubb Community Kitchen was a place for survivors to gather and prepare food together for families and the community.
In September 2018, the Duchess of Sussex helped the organisation to launch a new charity cookbook called Together.
Meghan has since taken inspiration from her time working with the charity, “reminded of the positive impact” it had on women who “grieved the loss of so much” following the devastating fire.
The report said: “Following that visit, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex began seeking ideas. The Archewell Foundation mobilised quickly to partner with Team Rubicon and Welcome.US to help address the needs of families resettling to the US, which can be particularly challenging when it comes to assessing education, employment opportunities, and health care services.”
The Archewell Foundation launched The Welcome Project in 2023 that supports women-led programming for recently resettled Afghan women.
There are currently 11 Welcome Projects “designed to foster a sense of belonging through activities including sewing, art, hiking, swimming, photography, storytelling, and cooking”.
Meghan has stayed involved in the Hubb Community Kitchen since her move to the US and spoke with members on the third anniversary of the Grenfell Tower disaster from her California home.
Speaking to the women, she said: “I think back to when I met all of you and how you had all come together in the wake of what you experienced in your community and now what you have done is such an inspiration, you continue to give back, you continue to to put love in action.
“And that’s really what Hubb is all about… we know it means love but you are the example of love in action, and that is your purpose.”
Last year, on the fifth anniversary of the tragedy, the group posted that they had received a voice message from Meghan.
The group shared on their Facebook: “Always very thoughtful, today we received a lovely voice message from the Duchess, being the 5 years anniversary of the Grenfell tragedy, asking how we are, about our children and families and giving us news of hers. Just being her beautiful kind self.”
