Prince Harry shows emotion in onstage appearance as he opens up about childhood

Prince Harry seemed “emotional” onstage as he opened up about his childhood at the Potential is Waiting event for Sentebale in Florida this week.

On Thursday, the day before he and Meghan Markle packed on the PDA after a polo tournament in Miami, Harry surprised royal fans when he appeared onstage at the event for his charity.

The Prince founded Sentebale in honour of the late Princess Diana, with the charity helping to support young people in southern Africa to reach their full potential.

Harry said his connection to the continent was down to his mother, as her work in Africa paved the way for his philanthropic ventures and inspired him.

Body language expert Judi James told The Mirror that the Duke of Sussex was confident in his words but seemed to get emotional when talking about Diana.

She explained: “Harry’s body language here appears to suggest a much more emotionally revealing and sharing mood as he talks on stage while sitting on a stool.

“His knee-splay and his slightly curved pelvis position suggests an undercurrent of inner comfort and confidence but we also have the distant eye-gaze suggesting he is digging deep into his own angst in an act of empathy while he holds his hand into a soft fist with the thumb between the fingers to suggest a desire to get his memories and feelings or his point across.”

Harry’s talk at the event was reported the following day, with Meghan apparently nowhere to be seen until she joined him at the polo, later congratulating him on his win.

Addressing the audience, the Duke expressed his love for the continent: “Africa’s in my heart, Africa’s in my soul. I first went there when I was 12… 13 years old, and after so many years I wanted to give back to it because it had given me so much.

“The vast open space, the cultures, the communities, the people, the wildlife, just the freedom was a huge piece of why I loved Africa so much.

“My mother had a strong focus on HIV and AIDS but also of the younger generation because it’s their futures that are being stolen from them.

“And at the heart of Sentebale, what we’ve always believed is that every single young person should have a chance at a better future.”

Harry and Meghan announced they were stepping down as working royals in 2020, and at one point there was a discussion over whether they would move to Africa.

However they ended up in California via Canada, where they live with their two young children Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.

Back in 2019, baby Archie visited South Africa with his parents just a few months after his birth, when they were still working royals.
