Five years of social plague that dreams of changing everything in Chile: “They want to erase the memory of what happened”

After wandering around for more than an hour visiting relics kept by Chile's Museum of Social Plague, a space dedicated to the memory of the largest wave of protests in the South American country since the return of democracy, five students and their teacher sat in a circle and they listened attentively it was the guide who accompanied them, Nataly Navarrete, one of the members of the group that manages it, who broke the ice: “What keeps you away from the experience you have just learned?”

This Thursday marks the fifth anniversary of the protests in October 2019, when high school students staged several simultaneous mobilizations against subway fare increases that sparked community protests for greater social rights. Some of the demonstrations were historic, lasting until the beginning of the pandemic and leaving around thirty people dead and thousands injured.
