Jimmy Carter got his wish: elect Harris

Georgia, i.- Former United States President Jimmy Carter, who turned 100 on October 1 and is the oldest former US president, cast his vote in the 2024 election this Wednesday, achieving what his family said was his goal: living long enough to elect Vice President Kamala Harris .

Carter voted by mail on Wednesday from his home in Plains, Georgia, a key state in the tight race between Harris and former President Donald Trump.

The Carter Center confirmed it voted by mail, but did not provide further details. The 39th president has told family members in recent weeks that he was more excited about casting his vote for Harris than he was about his 100th birthday.

Early voting opened Tuesday in the Peach State, and voters set a record opening day for early voting.

As of 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, about half a million voters had cast early and absentee ballots, according to Gabriel Sterling, a senior elections official with the Georgia Secretary of State. Carter has been receiving hospice care since February 2023. His wife of 77 years, former First Lady Rosalynn Carter, died last November at the age of 96.
