Dollarama has reached a $2.6 million settlement in a nationwide class action lawsuit over environmental fees applied to products such as batteries, electronic toys and light bulbs.
The settlement was confirmed in a press release Friday by class counsel Joey Zukran of Montreal law firm LPC Avocats.
The class action covers anyone who purchased products subject to environmental treatment charges from Dollarama stores in Quebec between December 11, 2019 and July 4, 2023, or anywhere in Canada between April 29, 2021 and July 4, 2023.
The proposed class action was originally filed in May 2023, alleging that the discount chain did not properly display the full price of products subject to eco fees.
A previous settlement of $2.5 million was then reached in February of this year, with Dollarama agreeing to pay the amount in gift cards, but this was rejected by a Quebec judge in April.
At that time, ruling documents show that the judge concluded there was insufficient evidence that the settlement would benefit class members or that the class action had been properly structured.
The new settlement amount is subject to court approval, with a hearing date set for December 2. Class members are eligible to receive Interac electronic transfers of up to $10.
