Drought levels in the Rio Negro are increasing, but drought continues in the Amazonas

The height of the Rio Negro reached 12.25 meters this Thursday (17) in the capital of Amazonas. But the rise in water levels in the rivers that drain Manaus in recent days does not yet indicate that the drought is over.

According to the Brazilian Geological Survey (SGB), more consistent and distributed rainfall is still needed, both in the upstream areas and in the central part of the basin and in the estuary, so that rainfall levels can recover.

SGB Geoscience Researcher, Marcus Suassuna, said that rainfall was still below normal.

“The rainy season has been going on for weeks with less rain, and other weeks with less rain. “This intermittent form of rain means that river levels, at the end of the dry season, are still slightly elevated, with a slight rise and possibility of stabilization,” he said.

During last year's drought, the Rio Negro began flooding on October 28 and began leaking again on November 8, a phenomenon known in Amazonas as repiquete.

This year's drought was the worst in history, when river levels reached a minimum of 12.11 meters on October 9.
