Attack on El Debate, attack on freedom of expression: Rocha

The attack on El Debate newspaper facilities in Culiacán should be considered an attack on freedom of expression, said Governor Rubén Rocha Moya.

“This should be considered an attack on freedom of expression,” the state president said.

In an interview at the police graduation ceremony at the Police University, he said that violence in Sinaloa on October 17 was continuing to be processed because of the large number of attacks. Among them, he said, were blockades, fires, beating tires, murders and attacks on El Debate facilities.

“General Mérida (Sinaloa's Secretary of Public Security) commented that one of the hypotheses is that there was an effort made to attract the attention of (military) forces”

-What do you mean by interesting? “Because they want to divert the attention of the National Guard and the Army,” he answered. The governor assured that he would visit the facilities of El Debate newspaper, that he spoke with businessman Javier Salido and that he ordered guards from the state police to be stationed on the outskirts of the newspaper. -Are there any conditions for journalists to come out and report? “Yes, there are conditions and if there are journalists who feel they are not authorized to say so, action can be taken,” said the Governor of Sinaloa.
